DNA Fingerprinting
Abstract
In this exercise students work in teams to apply basic genetic knowledge and previously gained lab skills (PCR and DNA gel electrophoresis) to the real-world problem of tracking down sites of illegal elephant poaching activity. This activity was adapted from HHMI's CSI Wildlife activity. Students are introduced to the concept of a DNA fingerprint analysis and examine simple fingerprints from individuals and populations of elephants. Using critical thinking and analysis students are able to draw conclusions related to fictional samples from elephants.
