Identification of a Functional Group

Abstract

This POGIL activity on identification of functional group is intended for a biochemistry class. The students in the class have already taken organic chemistry and are familiar with functional group. However, they struggle with remembering and identifying the functional groups which are critical for understanding concepts and pathways in the biochemistry course. Using the powerful study cycle and process skills (information processing and team work) in POGIL, it is hoped that at the end of the activity, they will have a better understanding of functional groups. Appropriate ELIPSS process skills rubrics have been added to the end of the activity so that the instructor can get student feedback on the process skills.
