Abstract

This Learning Cycle activity explores the formula unit and the relationships between elemental composition, molar mass, empirical formula, and molecular formula.

After completing this activity, students will be able to define formula unit, empirical formula and molecular formula; derive the empirical formula for a compound based on its percent composition; and derive a molecular formula when given the percent composition and formula mass of the compound.
